What is Earthing – how to get connected with the Ground!
“Earthing heals an electrical instability and electron deficiency you never knew you had.”
Like many of us, I used to spend a lot more time with my bare feet on the ground, than I ever do these days. Certainly, I did as a child!
In so many ways, modern culture disconnects us from the earth. The shoes we wear, the surfaces we walk on, and the buildings and cars we spend our time in, all keep us separate and isolated from our planet, which is abundant with healing energy!
In earlier times, before rubber-soled shoes, our footwear did not cut us off from the ground. We still had the opportunity to replenish ourselves through the natural exchange of electrons we are meant to have, by connecting with the soil or sand beneath our feet.
We need to connect to the earth in order to recharge.
Many people around the world, to this day, spend time sitting on the ground and are able to absorb earth’s energy in that way, too. It’s so good for us! But now for many of us, it takes effort and intention to regain what was once a natural part of daily life.
We are missing out, and our health suffers because modern shoes and buildings keep us insulated from the natural flow of electrons that comes from the earth
“The old people came literally to love the soil. They sat on the ground with the feeling of being close to a mothering power…the soil was soothing, strengthening, cleansing and healing.” Luther Standing Bear, as quoted in Earthing
From the book Earthing, we learn how powerful our connection to the actual ground is meant to be.
According to the book and many proponents of this theory, getting our bare feet onto the earth, grass or sand – especially if it’s damp for better conductivity – can do wonders for our health.
Earthing means to live in contact with the earth’s natural surface charge
…which discharges and prevents chronic inflammation. Perhaps inflammation (at the root of many health conditions) is a matter of electron deficiency!
The author of Earthing notes that we have abundant nerve endings in the soles of our feet. Perhaps this rich network of nerves is a way of “rooting” us to the earth and drawing up the earth’s energy!
It’s best to connect directly to the earth for at least half an hour a day. If you can’t, there are products available to “ground” you from indoors. Links are below!
“The earth beneath our feet contains great healing energy, and connecting ourselves to this energy is immediately beneficial as well as intuitive and remarkably simple.”
Activity: Earthing Meditation
Sit comfortably and become aware of your feet and the support of the earth beneath them. Breathe deeply and settle a bit more into that support that is available to you!
Feel into the earth with the soles of your feet. Imagine a root going down from the center of your foot, or smaller tendrils of roots going down from your soles, to explore the realm beneath the surface, as plants do. Enjoy the little stones and crystals, pockets of moisture, and other surprises that you will find there.
Find a large stone or crystal to wrap your roots around. Feel the support and foundation that this stone offers you. Continue to breathe deeply and let yourself relax into this grounded awareness.
Eventually, you can draw a colored light back up the roots and into your body – let it flow up to refresh your body, like the water that roots deliver to trees. This light can be whatever color you’d like. I find green or gold or pink to be healing, refreshing colors.
When you’re ready, gently draw your roots back from the soil, thanking yourself and the earth for this refreshing interlude. You may want to hold your palms over your eyes for a moment before you open them, and then return to your day.
